          Over the course of the summer, the FIT Leaders met to discuss the qualities and barriers of the teaching profession in North Carolina. First and foremost, the FIT Leaders believe that feeling respected is an important aspect of being treated as a professional.

          Career Barriers

          The list of barriers below represents the overarching and systemic challenges, identified by FIT Leaders, that prevent North Carolina from creating and fostering the career qualities required to be First in Teaching. They are also, therefore, our greatest opportunities to elevate the teaching profession beyond what is experienced in any other state. In addition, to the FIT Career Qualities, FIT Leaders indicated that feeling respected is an important aspect of being treated as a professional and that the barriers below have an impact on how respected they feel. While the emphasis here is on teaching, each of these barriers have a direct impact on teachers' ability to be effective and positively impact student success.

          I Believe That North Carolina Can Be First in Teaching!

          The underlying principal of the FIT Leaders' mission is the idea that educators are highly-skilled professionals. But what does it look like to be treated as a professional? This video helps to identify the differences between the professional experiences of educators and their peers in other industries.

          Freebird McKinney, Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year, kicked off the day by having the attendees examine their personal professional experiences through the lens of the career barriers. Watch what happens when business leaders, legislators and educators are able to compare and contrast their experiences in real time!
